Dating to 1982, the original Big Apple composition by George Wolffe features the familiar fruit referencing New York City s nickname peeled back to reveal a collage of black and white drawings of iconic local landmarks. In the wake of the 2001 terror attacks, he revised the design as Proudly We Stand , adding a colorful American Flag as background and restoring the Twin Towers to the City s skyline. The artist refers to this modification as his tribute to all the wounded and loved ones lost on 9 11. The updated design found its way onto posters and t-shirts sold widely around the New York metropolitan region. Both the first and second commemorative versions of Wolffe s artwork are in the collection of the 9 11 Memorial Museum.
